Historical background

Before colonization, Togo relied on traditional law as the main legal system. During colonization, the French imposed the French civil law system as the main legal system. Togo gained independence from France in 1960 and adopted the French civil law system in the new legal system.

Traditional law v Civil law

Both apply. Traditional law is mainly used at the local level by the village chief and council of elders.

Judiciary system

The Judicial system is made up of the Supreme Court, the Courts of Appeal and Tribunals of First Instance.
